We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

The 5 Best Cataract Surgery Facilities in Montreal for Clearer Days Ahead

Cloudy vision can make reading, driving, or simply recognising faces feel like a massive chore. And the best cataract surgery facilities in Montreal can help you reclaim your independence and see the world clearly again.

Wait times and different lens options can make cataract care difficult to manage, especially when you’re helping an older family member through the process.

We want to make this process easier for you! Our team explored local options to find facilities balancing expert care, modern tech, and patient safety.

Let’s dive into the top choices in the city!

How much does cataract surgery cost in Montreal?

Depending on whether you use public health insurance or choose a fully private self-pay clinic, a standard cataract surgery can be free, while premium upgrades or private surgeries range from $1,000 to $7,000 per eye.

Service TypeEstimated Cost
Public System (Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec Coverage – Standard Lens)Fully Covered ($0)
Public System (Premium Lens Upgrade)$1,000 – $3,500 per eye
Private Clinics (Standard to Premium Self-Pay)$3,000 – $7,000 per eye

How We Reviewed

Specialist Credentials: We looked for clinics staffed by experienced ophthalmologists and fellowship-trained surgeons. Teams with deep subspecialty backgrounds ensure safe handling of routine and complex eye procedures.
Diagnostic Technology: Accurate pre-operative measurements are crucial for successful lens replacement. We prioritised centres equipped with modern imaging tools like advanced biometry.
Lens Customisation Options: Everyone has different lifestyle needs, so access to diverse intraocular lenses matters. Clinics made the list if they offer multifocal, toric, and standard monofocal implants.
Wait Times and Accessibility: Lengthy delays can severely impact a patient’s quality of life. We favoured providers offering rapid specialist access or guaranteed surgery dates to minimise wait times.
Facility Safety Standards: The surgical environment must adhere to rigorous health and safety protocols. We checked for recognised accreditations or affiliations with premier hospital operating venues.

A miracle of modern eye care

Completely satisfied with this clinic. I had cataract surgery last fall. Dr. Paul and the entire team are very competent, and the follow-up care is excellent. It’s true that cataract surgery is routine these days, but when you think about it, how many people does it save their sight? For me, it remains a miracle of modern medicine!

Your team is very professional, thank you 😊

Professional and reassuring cataract surgery care

I had cataract surgery at the clinic. I was very apprehensive about the operation, but I must say that the clinic staff were very professional, approachable, and efficient! I thank Dr. Paul and his team for their excellent work. I would go back without hesitation.

Thank you again to all the staff.

2. Clinique Ophtalmologique Berri

Website: cliniqueberri.com

Address: 1066 Berri St

Contact: (514) 375-0987 | Fax: (438) 375-1919

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM

Clinique Ophtalmologique Berri breaks down cloudy lenses using advanced ultrasound technology for a quick 15-minute outpatient procedure. Their facility conducts thorough pre-operative evaluations before sending you to premier hospital venues.

Patients can easily customise their vision correction with multifocal or toric intraocular lenses. A friend actually took her father here and raved about the fast, same-day recovery process.

Many patients we spoke with also appreciate that their surgeon guided them through covered options and premium upgrades tailored to their lifestyle.

Another thing we like about the clinic is that they clearly map out a structured follow-up care schedule to catch any early inflammation. Having experienced subspecialists on staff ensures complex ocular needs are managed properly.

Unfortunately, you can’t have the surgery done directly at their central Berri Street office. Patients must navigate a busy hospital environment for their operation, and only a small handful of their doctors actually perform cataract surgeries.

Pros

  • Convenient downtown Montreal clinic location
  • Surgeries performed in premier university hospitals
  • Quick 15 to 30-minute outpatient procedure
  • Access to toric and multifocal lenses

Cons

  • Surgeries take place off-site in hospitals
  • Small number of dedicated cataract surgeons

Grateful for restored clear vision

For one year or so I have been visiting Clinique Ophtalmologique Berri for cataract diagnosis and treatment. I would like to sincerely thank all the staff and doctors, the receptionists and technicians for their professional and courteous service. I would also like to specially thank Dr. Antoine A. van der Poel, OD, Dr. Mikaël Sebag, MD, FRCSC and last but not the least, the skilled and empathetic Dr. Younes Agoumi, MD, FRCSC who did the cataract surgery and gifted me back my clear vision. I am truly grateful.

Excellent results and efficient service

My mother just had cataract surgery performed by Dr. Younes Agoumi. She is very happy with the result. Dr. Agoumi is very competent. Furthermore, the appointment system is very efficient!

Thank you for your help!

Clinique Vision Pros lets you bypass referral delays and book a direct consultation with an ophthalmologist in just one week.

Their ultramodern facility runs complete diagnostic assessments, including optical coherence tomography (OCT), to rule out coexisting eye diseases.

They offer advanced phaco-refractive options rather than a single generic implant. You can choose from trifocal or extended depth-of-field lenses to match your daily habits.

Led by Dr. Hillel Zukor, this multidisciplinary team covers everything from the eyelid to the optic nerve. This broad subspecialty depth means your surgical and post-operative care happen smoothly under one roof.

One downside is that their in-person emergency care is strictly limited to weekday hours. If an acute post-surgical complication arises over the weekend, you’ll have to visit an outside hospital instead.

Pros

  • Consultations available in as little as one week
  • Direct specialist access without referrals
  • Large multidisciplinary team of ten eye doctors
  • Ultramodern facility with advanced diagnostics

Cons

  • In-clinic emergencies restricted to weekdays

Outstanding care from an exceptional specialist

If you are looking for a glaucoma specialist, cataract specialist, Comprehensive Ophthalmologist, or an eye doctor you can trust for eye emergencies, Dr. Zuker is absolutely outstanding. Whether you are in Montreal or even outside the city, I highly recommend him. I’m so grateful for the exceptional care he and his amazing team provided.

VisionPros is truly one of the best eye clinics in Montreal and Quebec, and I couldn’t be more thankful for the excellent care I received.

Compassionate and dedicated dry eye care

I had the pleasure of visiting this clinic for treatment of my dry eyes, and I can confidently say that Dr. Nissan is one of the best doctors I’ve ever encountered. She is incredibly knowledgeable, compassionate, and clearly dedicated to staying current with the latest research and advancements in her field. What truly sets her apart is the time she takes to listen and understand your concerns. She genuinely cares about your treatment and overall well-being. She also recognizes how costly treatments can be and goes out of her way to help find options that are more accessible.

Contact: 514-931-2020 | Fax: 514-931-1953

Dr. Mark Gans provides highly comprehensive cataract assessments and customised intraocular lens counselling. His practice ensures every cataract procedure happens inside a McGill-affiliated hospital for top-tier safety.

We actually spoke with a patient who visited him for a surgical second opinion. He shared that he felt incredibly reassured by Dr Gans’s clear guidance.

It’s also great that patients can discuss advanced lens options, including multifocal lenses, based on their vision goals and surgical needs.

Keep in mind that Dr Gans focuses strictly on pre-operative assessments and counselling, meaning he won’t perform the surgery himself. You must transition to another surgeon in his group and travel to a separate hospital facility for the procedure.

On the bright side, his team includes fellowship-trained surgeons capable of managing high-risk and complex cases.

Pros

  • Procedures held in McGill-affiliated hospitals
  • Calculates exact lens power with biometrics
  • Handles high-risk and complicated cataracts
  • Welcomes patients for dedicated second opinions

Cons

  • Lead doctor doesn’t perform the surgery

Structured and precise cataract surgery

Dr. Cheema performed cataract surgery on both my eyes with excellent care. His process is structured and precise: lens assessment, surgery, and attentive follow-ups. A doctor who leaves nothing to chance.

Calm Experience During Unforeseen Panic

He performed my 2 catarac eye surgery and I found out while in mid stride I was claustrophobic and started to panic. With his experience he calmed me down and continued with the procedure. I was already “freaking out” from all the horror stories I heard from people who underwent the same surgery but Dr. Gans made sure I didn’t feel a thing while I was awake during the operation, and he was teaching a class of McGill students while operating on me. I want no one else touching my eyes! He’s the doctor that doctors go to for procedures.

That experience extends to advanced lens options, including light-adjustable lenses that allow vision to be fine-tuned after the eye has healed.

Actually, a close friend had his procedure here and told us the rapid recovery was amazing. He even noticed clear improvements and returned to his normal routine the very next day.

  • Free one-hour initial evaluation
  • Painless injection-free anesthesia
  • Rapid next-day visual recovery

Amazing guidance and fantastic results

Excellent results. Had light adjustable lens cataract surgery on April 30th by Dr. Daniel Belliveau.  Both eyes at the same time. LAL dominant and LAL+ non dominant. Two adjustments by Dr. Christian Perreault. YAG by Dr. Alain Grégoire, tear plug by Dr. Perreault and one lock down today July 23rd following last final lock down by Dr. Perreault in a week.  Amazing care, guidance and amazing results.  Truly appreciate and well worth it.

Thank you all.

Trusted vision care over two decades

19 years ago Dr Pop and his wonderful team inserted IOL’s to correct my -19,-17 myopia.  Today Dr Pop worked his magic with cataract surgery on one eye.  I don’t trust anyone but this clinic and staff with my vision.   I saw one person said an employee was “rude”.  They are there to do a delicate, life altering surgery not to coddle you, to be blunt!  Get over it.
