Hit the Right Notes with the Best Piano Lessons in Montreal

Ever tried playing “Für Elise” and ended up sounding like a cat walking across the keys? Yeah, us too.

But hey, just because we’re not Mozart reincarnated doesn’t mean we can’t tickle those ivories and have a blast doing it. If you’re a fellow piano enthusiast with more enthusiasm than skill (guilty as charged!), this guide is your ticket to finding the perfect piano teacher in Montreal.

We’ve done the legwork, braved countless recitals (earplugs were a lifesaver), and chatted with experts to uncover the best piano lessons in Montreal. Check them out here!

How much do piano lessons cost in Montreal?
On average, piano lessons in Montreal cost $65 per hour. However, the final cost may change depending on the teacher’s expertise, location, lesson length and whether it’s done in-person or online.

How We Chose

Teacher expertise and qualifications – We focused on instructors with professional training, strong teaching backgrounds, and proven success in music education.
Flexibility and scheduling option – We prioritised schools that offer flexible scheduling, online classes, and make-up lessons.
Student reviews – We read through numerous reviews and talked to students to find out what they really think about their lessons. We paid attention to comments about progress, enjoyment, and overall satisfaction.
Performance opportunities – We gave extra points to schools that provide recital opportunities, encouraging students to showcase their skills and build confidence.

Makes returning to piano achievable and fun

“My experience with the Academy of Music was one of the best choices that I have made. Returning to the piano after some 40 years without touching it was risky, at best. With the help of my teacher, Houry Manougian, this challenge has become achievable and fun at the same time. I am progressing very well as I have a structured daily practice based on the courses and my level. The idea is to make my brains remember and then, transfer it to my fingers… but it’s working!”

Provides balanced and well-explained homework

“Our son has loved music since his piano lessons. Her progress is constant and the teacher, through her organisation, her method and her finesse, makes her piano lessons very attractive. The choice of material used is well thought out and it helps the child to progress. The homework is very balanced and well explained. I recommend The Academy. I am 100% happy that my child has the chance to learn piano through these lessons.”

Musiprof has definitely caught our attention as one of the go-to spots for piano lessons in Montreal. We love how they offer lessons in three different ways—at the teacher’s studio, in your own home, or online—so you can pick what works best for your lifestyle.

Their teachers are highly skilled and can help you whether you’re a total beginner or diving into advanced jazz piano. When we talked to some of their students, they raved about their instructor’s quality of teaching and flexibility.

Rates are pretty reasonable, starting at $25 for a 30-minute lesson. It can go up to $41 for a full hour, depending on the teacher’s credentials. And if you’re looking to commit, they offer packages of 5, 10, or 15 lessons, which can save you a few bucks in the long run.

  • Affordable rates
  • Discounted packages

Cons

Offers a resourceful platform for piano lessons

“I started using Musiprof less than two months ago and the platform is resourceful. My piano teacher, Joshua Wong, is by far one of the best piano teachers I’ve had. He is patient and passionate. In less than two months, I’ve learned new sight reading skills, good piano postures, hand positions and hand coordination. I recommend Joshua for anyone that is looking to sharpen their piano skills or anyone that wants to learn how to play the piano from scratch.”

Helps you learn piano from the fundamentals

“I could easily find my piano teacher among different pianists offered by the website. One nice feature is that I could see their background and choose a teacher according to my needs. It has been ten month that I have taken piano classes with Olha. She uses Russian school method which is absolutely what I love. She can easily recognize my weaknesses and give me exercises accordingly. She is very patient and I like her exercises in scales, chords and synchronisation of both hands and I suggest her to any one interested to learn piano from the fundamentals.”

Académie de musique Lauber, run by the incredibly talented Tristan Lauber, has really impressed us. The studio’s location is a big win. It’s right where Outremont, the Plateau Mont-Royal, and Mile-End meet, making it a breeze to get to.

And let’s not forget the gorgeous 6’3 Baldwin grand piano you get to play on – talk about an inspiring setting!

What we love is how Tristan goes above and beyond to tailor lessons to each student. Whether they’re just starting out or fine-tuning their skills, he ensures the lessons match their style and goals. Some students also said his approach keeps them engaged and excited to learn more.

We also appreciate that he connects students with other top-notch instructors he trusts he’s booked solid (which happens a lot).

Pros

  • Convenient location
  • Top-quality equipment
  • Personalised lessons
  • Experienced instructor
  • Instructor network

Cons

  • Limited availability

Offers instruction from a skilled and patient pianist

“Simply put, Tristan is a wonderful teacher. On top of that, he has to be one of the most efficient people I’ve ever met. As it stands, he’s well on his way to becoming the don of a global piano empire and I’m convinced that had he not been sidetracked by the piano he’d probably be supreme overlord of the world by now. In all seriousness, Tristan is a very skilled pianist and a patient teacher, and one that I’d recommend to anyone wishing to pursue the piano. In addition to being able to help beginners and advanced students alike with their technique, Tristan can also help with solfege and theory as he was able to teach me enough of these fields to be accepted to a music cegep within just one month. Lastly, Tristan is able to provide the opportunity to play in a concert before a large audience at least once a year for those interested. All in all, Tristan is a terrific teacher and one that helped me enormously in my development as a pianist.”

Develops a love for the instrument in each student

“I have known Tristan for over 20 years and have had the privilege of working with him in the past as a musician and colleague. His strong musical, pianistic and artistic abilities and knowledge make him stand out as both a musician and pedagogue. He has performed as a recitalist, orchestra soloist, chamber musician and accompanist throughout Canada and internationally, allowing him to collaborate with other musicians of international reputation and caliber. Over the years, I have also observed Tristan as a teacher and have seen how passionate, patient and attentive he is with each of his students, no matter what age or level they are. He has a wonderful and easy going personality, as well as a vested interested in ensuring that each of his students succeed and excel in their piano abilities and develop a love for their instrument. I would not hesitate to recommend Tristan as one of the top pianists and piano teachers of our city.”

We recently discovered ReMi Academy, and we’re so glad we did! Alireza Fakharian founded it back in 2013, and they’re all about top-notch music education.

Their teachers really impressed us. We got to chat with Isaac, who’s a jazz pianist with a degree from McGill. He’s got this amazing musical range, from classical to jazz, and everything in between. You can tell he really cares about helping his students find their own musical voice.

We also love that ReMi puts on concerts throughout the year. It’s a great chance for students to show off what they’ve learned.

Another thing we appreciate is the free first consultation they offer. It allows the students to meet their teacher and see if it’s a good fit.

Registering is also super easy. You just have to fill out a form through their website.

Pros

  • Wide range of programs
  • Talented instructors
  • Performance opportunities
  • Free first consultation
  • Flexible learning options

Cons

  • A few  reports of female students feeling uncomfortable

Creates a welcoming atmosphere for children

“The Remy Academy complex is really a very good and positive environment, and I think the main reason for this is the kind and professional staff there. Especially, their kind and professional behaviour is Marzieh and Monireh , they are very customer-oriented and have a great attitude with children. And special thanks to Aram is my son’s music teacher who is very professional and patient. I really recommend this place to parents of children.”

Lauded as a “Teacher of Distinction” by the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM), Silvia Buttiglione is a wonderful option to begin your piano journey.

She uses Smart Start, an early childhood music program created by the RCM in Toronto, as the main curriculum for her lessons. Its goals are grounded in improving both musical and cognitive skills which are beneficial for bringing out your inner Chopin.

Silvia focuses on providing drills that enhance memory, attention, and of course, finger dexterity—which supplement the learnings from music dynamics. Her teaching was very comprehensive from the get-go, it was as if I was transported to the conservatory itself!

A great benefit of her classes is the opportunity to perform in formal venues, showcasing all we’ve learned. Parents are welcomed to attend both lessons and these recitals. It’s a special way to celebrate the progress together!

Silvia offers both onsite and online options, and can cater to students in English, French, or Italian. Because of her limited availability, it may be difficult to get slots, but the quality of instruction makes it well worth the wait!
