Her cozy studio focuses on hands-on methods like pinch potting, coiling, and modelling. She also caps every class at just five students, so you get plenty of personal coaching. 

On top of that, the bilingual instruction in French and English makes it easy for anyone to follow along.

Just keep in mind that you have to pay an extra material fee for clay, which isn’t included in the base course price. Also, the strict five-person limit means you can’t book large group events together.

Practising clay work as a mindful meditation is the core philosophy at Mie Kim Ceramic Studio. This spot was founded by acclaimed artist Mie Kim, whose work has appeared in Elle Canada and The Globe and Mail. 

The studio offers single-day sessions and multi-week deep dives into wheel throwing. Their instructors emphasize posture, breath, and aesthetic control to help you build confidence on the wheel. 

Private group classes start at reasonable rates, too, if you want an intimate gathering.

The downside is that short introductory classes only cover throwing and trimming, leaving the final glazing steps to longer multi-week students. 

Also, you’re not allowed to drop by unannounced, as the studio operates strictly by appointment.

Earning official selection at the prestigious 1001 Pots Expo 2026, Canada’s premier ceramic showcase, ATELIER MA offers top-tier instruction in a plant-filled space. 

The studio provides private events for small groups as well as dedicated Sunday morning drop-in wheel classes. You can even browse their handmade ceramic shop on select weekdays.

A friend joined their Sunday class and found the atmosphere super welcoming. She highlighted that the instructors walk her through centring clay step by step without rushing. 

The catch is that you must pay an extra $28 fee for each piece you want fired and kept after the Sunday class. In addition, their independent open studio program requires a three-month minimum commitment, which is tough for casual potters.

Run by a cooperative of three Cégep du Vieux Montréal ceramics graduates, Îlot Des Carrières focuses on making pottery accessible and community-driven for all skill levels. 

They offer private two-and-a-half-hour classes alongside structured multi-week workshops in French and English. Their cooperative environment gives students access to slab rollers, extruders, and generous work tables. 

Intermediate makers can also sign up for a four-week Thursday creation block to practice self-directed projects.

However, you must complete at least 35 hours of prior pottery classes before you can join their independent monthly membership. That membership also requires a firm two-month commitment, so it doesn’t suit short-term visitors.

Their six-week wheel-throwing courses give beginners a solid foundation in modern pottery design. Class groups stay small with a nine-student limit, ensuring everyone receives personal attention. 

If you get sick or have a schedule conflict, you can freely transfer your registration to a friend. Plus, if you miss the second week of a short workshop, studio staff will trim and glaze your piece for you.

On the downside, late cancellations made under three days in advance forfeit all credits. Make-up classes for missed multi-week sessions are also never guaranteed because open wheel spots fill fast.
