9 best steakhouses in Montreal you’ve gotta try at least once

Steak might seem simple, but getting it right in the kitchen is no joke. You need that perfect balance between tenderness without stripping off the rich flavours.

I say this from experience. My parents used to cook steak all the time, and they always nailed it. Ever since, I’ve been chasing that same standard with my friends, checking out steakhouses around Montreal to see who can measure up.

After plenty of meals (and plenty of debates), we’ve narrowed down the spots that truly deliver. If you’re craving a solid steak and want some tried-and-tested options, check out our list of favourite steakhouses in Montreal.

1. Vieux-Port Steakhouse

Website

Address: 39 Rue Saint-Paul E

Contact details: +1 514-866-3175

Operating hours:

  • Monday to Thursday: 11:30 AM – 10 PM
  • Friday: 11:30 AM – 11 PM
  • Saturday: 11 AM – 11 PM
  • Sunday: 11 AM – 10 PM

Price: $$$

Located in a beautiful old building, Vieux-Port Steakhouse’s vibe is a mix of cosy, classy, and historic. You can dine inside if you’re into an old-school steakhouse feel, or grab a table out on the garden terrace, which is amazing when the weather behaves.

They serve AAA Canadian Certified beef that’s aged for 30 days, so their steaks have been pampered. The menu has all the usual suspects: New York sirloin, filet mignon, rib steak, and more. From what we’ve gathered, they’re all juicy, tender, and flavourful.

As for service, this place seems to have it down. Staff are friendly and super-attentive, and somehow manage to be both professional and genuinely nice. Bonus points for the fresh bread and butter that magically appear at your table before the main event.

Pro tip:
If you’re already going big with their grilled steak, why not go all in and add lobster to the mix? They offer classic surf and turf options that elevate the meal. It’s a splurge, but it’s worth it if you’re celebrating something.

2. The Keg Steakhouse + Bar – Place Ville Marie

Address: Place Ville Marie, Mansfield St #5

Contact details:

Operating hours:

  • Monday: 11:30 AM – 11 PM
  • Tuesday to Friday: 11:30 AM – 12 AM
  • Saturday: 4 PM – 12 AM
  • Sunday: 4 PM – 11 PM

Price: $$$

The Keg Steakhouse’s prime rib came highly recommended by both staff and regulars, and now we get why. It’s slow-roasted, carved to order, and seasoned with Keg spice mix that just works.

One of us also went for the rib steak and added the whisky peppercorn sauce. It was cooked perfectly (medium-rare, exactly as ordered), and that sauce was chef’s kiss.

Service-wise, we were impressed. The staff were friendly and knew the menu inside out. Timing was on point since our appetisers came out in under 20 minutes, and mains shortly after.

We didn’t sit on the terrace this time, but it looked like a great option if the weather’s nice. The bar scene was lively too, with a solid wine list and some fun cocktails going around.

Pro tip:If you can’t decide between cuts, try the Keg Steak Platter. It’ll give you a taste of filet mignon, sirloin, and striploin with two sauces on the side. It’s generous and perfect for steak lovers who like to compare.

3. Gibbys

Website

Address: 298 Pl. d’Youville

Contact details: +1 514-282-1837

Operating hours:

  • Monday to Tuesday: 5 PM – 10 PM
  • Wednesday to Thursday: 11:30 AM – 10 PM
  • Friday: 11:30 AM – 10:30 PM
  • Saturday: 11:30 AM – 11 PM
  • Sunday: 5 PM – 10 PM

Price: $$$

If you’re going to dine here in Gibbys, try to get a table on the terrace—it feels like you’ve been transported to Europe. This place might be a little overpriced, but stepping into what feels like a Parisian lodge and having the best steak makes it totally worth it.

They’re best known for their 22-ounce rib steak, a.k.a the Gibbys Cut. It’s big, well-marbled, and cooked exactly as requested. Dare I say, it doesn’t need a drop of sauce.

What stood out to us, though, was how the meal is paced. You’re not just getting a steak slapped on a plate. There’s a solid rhythm to the dining experience.

You start with a crisp Gibbys salad, follow it with a lemon sorbet to reset your palate. Then, dive into your main, served with fresh vegetables and a choice of sides.

Pro tip:Parking in Old Montreal can be a pain, so the valet service is a serious perk. Make sure to take advantage of it. It makes the whole night smoother.

4. Firegrill Montréal Downtown

Website

Address: 1490 Stanley St

Contact details: +1 514-842-0020

Operating hours:

  • Monday: 11:30 AM – 10 PM
  • Tuesday to Friday: 11:30 AM – 11 PM
  • Saturday: 12 PM – 11 PM
  • Sunday: 3 PM – 10 PM

Price: $$$

Firegrill is spacious enough for big groups but still warm enough for date night vibes. We were seated in a booth that was comfortable, and we immediately noticed the open kitchen setup. It’s always satisfying watching chefs work the grill while waiting.

We went full steakhouse mode with our orders: rib steak, prime rib, and peppercorn steak. They all have a crispy sear on the outside and are juicy on the inside.

The baby back ribs were super tender, and that mesquite BBQ glaze really came through without being overpowering. We also appreciated that the portion sizes were just right. They were generous, but no one needed to be rolled out to the door.

Pro tip:Even though walk-ins are often welcome, Firegrill can get busy, especially on weekends or before big events at the nearby Bell Centre. Book a table in advance if you’re dining before a concert or hockey game.

5. Restaurant Méchant Boeuf

Website

Address: 124 Saint-Paul St W

Contact details: +1 514-788-4020

Operating hours:

  • Monday to Wednesday: 5 PM – 10 PM
  • Thursday to Saturday: 5 PM – 11 PM
  • Sunday: 5 PM – 10 PM

Price: $$$

On our first visit to Restaurant Méchant Boeuf, the service was fast and everything flowed smoothly. It left such a good impression that we came back again.

Though the second time around, we did have to wait a bit longer. Still, the staff remained polite and attentive, just not quite as snappy as the first round.

When you taste their Côte de Boeuf, you can tell they’ve dry-aged and seasoned it so well. It’s very satisfying and lingers in the best way. The tomahawk took around an hour to be served, but once we got a bite, all was forgiven.

Downstairs has a more party-forward feel. There are local DJs on the weekends, louder music, and great cocktails. But we’d recommend sticking to the main dining area if your focus is really on the food.

Pro tip:Pair your steak with a Canadian red wine. The staff gives solid pairing suggestions, and the local wines really complement the richness of the beef.

6. Reuben’s Deli & Steakhouse

Website

Address: 1116 Saint-Catherine St W

Contact details: +1 514-866-1029

Operating hours:

  • Monday: 12 PM – 9 PM
  • Tuesday to Thursday: 12 PM – 10 PM
  • Friday to Saturday: 12 PM – 11 PM
  • Sunday: 12 PM – 10 PM

Price: $$

The ribeye in Reuben’s was the star for a few of us. It’s rich, tender 1855 Black Angus, and aged just right. If you want a bolder and buttery flavour, their Delmonico steak might just be right up your alley.

Sides are no afterthought either. Garlic mash is creamy and classic, the onion rings are thick-cut and addictive, and we’d happily come back just for those cheddar-potato pancakes.

Steak dishes feel well-priced for the quality, especially considering the location. Some of the non-steak options seemed a bit on the higher side, so we’d say stick with what they clearly do best—steak and smoked meats.

Pro tip:Save room for the cheesecake! It’s rich, creamy, and probably one of the best we’ve had in a steakhouse setting.

7. Sel Noir Steakhouse

Media credits: selnoirmtl

Website

Address: 1490 Sherbrooke St W

Contact details: +1 514-292-2923

Operating hours:

  • Monday: 5 PM – 10 PM
  • Tuesday to Thursday: 5 PM – 11 PM
  • Friday to Saturday: 5 PM – 12 AM
  • Sunday: 5 PM – 11 PM

Price: $$$

Our team was expecting a dimly lit restaurant when we visited Sel Noir Steakhouse based on their Instagram, but the actual space surprised us in the best way. It’s elegant, with just the right amount of light and some low-key jazz-lounge energy.

Between us, we tried the ribeye, filet mignon, and tomahawk steak. All three needed almost nothing else, just a bit of in-house seasoning to let the beef do its thing.

The tomahawk steak, though, was impressive in terms of proportion. We shared it between the team, and we still got some leftovers. If you’re going with friends, you should order it just for the theatre of it arriving at the table.

Pro tip:Steaks come solo, with no sides included. We recommend ordering a few to share, like truffle fries and sautéed vegetables.

8. Restaurant Gus

Media credits: restaurant.gus

Website

Address: 38 Rue Beaubien E

Contact details: +1 514-722-2175

Operating hours:

  • Monday to Wednesday: Closed
  • Thursday to Friday: 5:30 PM – 10 PM
  • Saturday to Sunday: Closed

Price: $$

With only 26 seats and an open kitchen setup, the Restaurant Gus experience was both intimate and interactive. It’s like you’re part of the action, especially if you grab a seat at the bar where Chef David Angus Ferguson himself is grilling just a few feet away.

Their bavette was beautifully seared and tender, with that slight chew you expect from a well-prepared cut. What we appreciated most was how confidently they lean into honest, fire-driven cooking. No gimmicks—just skill and respect for the ingredients.

That said, don’t sleep on the rest of the menu. The Caesar salad with caviar and lardons was something we didn’t expect to love as much as we did. It’s luxurious but still grounded, thanks to those house-made croutons and creamy, peppery dressing.

Pro tip:Since the space is small and their reputation is strong, we recommend making a reservation early on. Walk-ins are too risky.

9. Moishes

Media credits: moishesmontreal

Website

Address: 1001 Rue du Square-Victoria

Contact details: +1 514-360-4221

Operating hours:

  • Monday to Wednesday: 11:30 AM – 10:30 PM
  • Thursday to Friday: 11:30 AM – 11 PM
  • Saturday: 2 PM – 11 PM
  • Sunday: 2 PM – 10:30 PM

Price: $$$

There’s a timeless elegance to Moishes that feels authentic, not performative. The ambience somehow works for both date night and a celebratory dinner with friends.

The staff has a thoughtful and classic style of service where you are looked after from start to finish.

There are warm towels, complimentary challah with sage butter, and a selection of steak knives to choose from.

The prime rib and sirloin steak were the standouts for us. Their house steak spice doesn’t just coat the meat; it elevates it. Sides hit the right notes too. Garlic mashed potatoes and creamed spinach were indulgent without being heavy.

Pro tip:If you can swing a lunch visit, it’s a slightly faster, more relaxed vibe. It’s still excellent, just with a bit more breathing room than during dinner times.
