How We Chose
1. Magnus Poirier
Location: Various locations in Montreal (Pie-IX Funeral Complex, Viau Funeral Complex, and Sherbrooke Funeral Complex)
Contact: +1 514-727-2847
Operating hours: 24 hours
Magnus Poirier has been around for over 100 years, and it’s easy to see why they’ve built such a strong reputation.
What really caught our eye was their flexibility. You can either attend the cremation or let them handle everything behind the scenes while you focus on the more personal moments.
In addition to their accommodating approach, their peace parlours are perfect for viewings. We also appreciated their selection of urns and reliquary jewellery, which adds a thoughtful touch to the whole experience.
Another highlight is how they make the planning process easy. You can handle everything online without even leaving your home, whether it’s for a cremation or a pre-arrangement.
They’re open 24/7, which is a real plus in such emotional times. But, we did hear from a few people that the staff can come across as a bit standoffish at times.
Handles funeral arrangements with compassion
“I want to draw attention to Ms.Juliana Restrepo’s outstanding professional handling of our father’s funeral arrangements. From the beginning Ms.Restrepo was there for our family understanding the difficult circumstances and handling absolutely everything with compassion and discreteness..She’s a dedicated individual always present throughout the process offering a listening ear and supportive shoulder..My sisters and I could have not fallen into better hands and we thank Juliana deeply from our hearts. Rodriguez-Capellan family.”

2. Kane Fetterly
Location: 5301 Decarie Blvd
Contact: +1 514-481-5301
Operating hours: 24 hours
Having been around since 1965, Kane Fettterly brings something special to the table when it comes to funeral services.
One thing we really noticed is how flexible they are with their cremation options. Whether you want something simple and private or a larger, more detailed ceremony, they’ve got you covered.
What’s particularly unique is their option to hold these ceremonies at different locations, including your own home. This choice helps things feel more personal.
We’re also big fans of their online services; it’s so convenient to plan everything from your own space. Plus, their live streaming makes sure no one misses out, no matter where they are.
They’re open 24/7, which is always a plus. However, a few people did mention the staff can come off a bit too casual and not quite as professional as expected.
Provides compassionate and efficient service
“We were very pleased with the services at Kane Fetterly starting with Mary, the counsellor, who was knowledgeable, thorough, efficient, compassionate and understanding of our needs at this difficult time. The contracting was straightforward and transparent and when our mother passed, the arrangements were conducted exactly as agreed. The document service saved us a great deal of time and potential aggravation. The communication was excellent throughout the process. The funeral itself was handled competently under the supervision of Christian, one of the Funeral Directors assigned to us. He was our main contact after our mother passed and he was very helpful with any questions and concerns. We would certainly recommend Kane Fetterly to anyone going through a similar hardship.”

Offers compassionate and attentive support
“We lost my dad unexpectedly this year and the entire process was made so much easier by the people at Kane & Fetterly, in particular Christian and Jane. Their service and attention to detail is incredible, and they really are amazing at what they do. At a time where you don’t have the capacity to deal with organising papers and plans, they really know how to step up and take care of all the hard stuff for you. Thank you so much to Chris, Jane, and the entire team at Kane & Fetterly, I cannot recommend them enough.”

3. Centre funéraire Côte-des-Neiges
Location: 4525 Chem. de la Côte-des-Neiges
Contact: +1 514-342-8000
Operating hours: 24 hours
Located beside the serene Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cemetery, Centre funéraire Côte-des-Neiges offers a truly calm and comforting environment.
They cater to a diverse range of cultural and religious practices, making sure that each service feels as unique as the individual being honoured.
With options ranging from simple cremations to more elaborate ceremonies, families have the flexibility to choose what best suits their needs.
We also really like the added security of their on-site crematory. Your loved one stays in their care the entire time, which offers some peace of mind.
Their prepaid plans are a bonus, especially since they can be adjusted or transferred across North America. This feature is especially useful if your family relocates.
While they’re available around the clock, we did come across a few mentions of slow follow-ups, which is worth noting.
Offers continuous guidance and assistance
“Mr. Fortin and his team worked diligently to support us in all our decision making and throughout the 2 days that the viewing, the service and the celebratory meal were held. The family really appreciated that support!”

Handles all arrangements with professionalism and care
“It was a very stressful time when we got to Montreal and was there for my Uncle’s last moment. We were so lucky to have found Centre funéraire Côte-des-Neiges. Mr. Nam contacted us within 30 minutes after leaving a message with the admin staff and we were able to meet him within an hour. Mr. Nam is professional and very knowledgeable. He helped us to arrange the service for my Uncle and within 24 hours, we were able to pay our respect to my Uncle at the facility before heading back to Calgary. Mr. Nam and staff at Centre funéraire Côte-des-Neiges are so incredibly accommodating, attentive and go above and beyond to help us to get through the arrangement for my Uncle. Everyone at Centre funéraire Côte-des-Neiges are true professionals and we were so grateful to have worked with them and truly appreciate for everything they have done for us.”

4. Complexe Funéraire Aeterna et Crématorium
Location: 55 Rue Gince, Saint-Laurent,
Contact: +1 514-284-5440
Operating hours: Monday to Sunday – 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Complexe Funéraire Aeterna et Crématorium brings something really special to the table with their full-service cremation packages.
From handling the death certificates to transporting your loved one, they cover all the bases. We love how they provide a private, well-lit room for intimate farewells, complete with multimedia capabilities so you can personalise the tribute.
What stands out most to us is their in-house crematorium, which allows families to be present during the cremation if that’s what they prefer.
Their focus on accessibility is also impressive. This is evident in their eco-friendly urns, columbarium services, and even the option to order flowers online.
In addition, they even accommodate a wide range of cultural and religious rituals. They achieve this by offering services in up to 13 languages, ensuring that every ceremony feels personal.
Now here’s the thing: they don’t have 24/7 availability, which is a bit of a drawback compared to others on our list.
Solves concerns quickly and professionally
“Excellent service. Staff was very patient and understanding. Solved every issue and concern we had right away. A little bit of issue with the livestream they provide for the people away but it is not something they are in complete control of. Don’t wish this day for anyone to come anytime soon but it is a great funeral home to say your loved one your final goodbyes.”

Exceeds expectations with thoughtful and personalised service
“They exceeded my expectations. Due to COVID-19, having a lot of people at my late grandfather’s wake would’ve been risky. The live telecast not only helped people mourn my grandfather’s passing from their home, it helped our family mourn internationally from Austria and Bangladesh. They even gave us his handprints and footprints on four pieces of paper, a service that I asked them to do last minute, the day before. The pallbearers Pat and Jacob executed their task with great empathy. The funeral director (although he prefers the title funeral guide) Steve is clearly doing his job out of passion, which is rare for a funeral home. I really hope I don’t have to see them again because another funeral is the last thing I am anticipating in my life, but if I have to choose a last resting place for a loved one, I would choose Aeterna as long as people like Steve, Pat and Jacob are there.”
